James “Flushy” Dempsey is a soft spoken professional poker player from Brighton, England. A highly respected and feared opponent on the felt, Dempsey has proven to accurately reflect his poker moniker through a surgical approach to the game. Over the course of a relatively short yet illustrious career, James has amassed a small fortune of $2 million in live tournament winnings, and over $1 million in online cashes. Among his many accomplishments, James has secured his place in poker history by becoming one of a select few to hold both a WPT title and WSOP bracelet. The WPT he won took place in the 2011 Five Diamond Classic and James won his WSOP bracelet in the 2010 $1500 Pot Limit Hold’em Event.
James had been a successful poker player since before the Moneymaker boom. His early career was heavily rooted in the English poker scene. A great deal of his success came in 2009 during the PokerStars annual WSCOOP, where Dempsey cashed in 3 events, including a 2nd place finish in the No Limit Hold’em Event for $211,000. Later that year, at the 40th annual WSOP $2,500 Omaha Hi/Lo event in Las Vegas, James came in 14th place for a modest sum of $12,667. This would set the bar for his electrifying success in 2010.
In 2010, at the 41st annual WSOP, James had a break out performance. During the series he was able to cash 4 times, including the seizing of a bracelet in the $1500 Pot limit Hold’em Event for $197,470 and a 2nd place finish in the $10,000 Omaha Hi/Lo 8 championship where he settled for a prize of $301,789. Dempsey received much acclaim and media coverage for his performance that year, landing him a sponsorship deal with Full Tilt Poker and cementing his place among the greatest British poker players of our time. Since that unforgettable summer, James has had consistent 6 figure earnings on the poker circuit and generated quite a reputation in the high stakes live cash game circles.
2011 had a very slow start for James than what 2010 had gotten him accustomed to. Having had a relatively quiet year on the live circuit, posting small scores in a few events and only 2 cashes at the 42nd annual WSOP, it would not be until December of that year for James to achieve his most coveted award. At the WPT Five Diamond Classic $10,000 Main Event, James was able to dissect his way through a field of 413 entrants, including a final table comprised of Vanessa Selbst, November Niner Soi Nguyen, and defending WPT titlist Antonio Esfandiari, for a first place finish with $821,612 in prize money. With this victory James catapulted to 65th on the 2011 money list and provided good momentum for 2012.
Today James can be found in some of the biggest games in the world. His success as a tournament poker player has given him the opportunity to tour the circuit and take time out to enjoy the many luxuries of his chosen profession. Much of James’ spare time is spent on the green where he enjoys a healthy golf routine and traveling the world. As a member of the Team Ivey training stable, James “Doctor” Dempsey will be lending his world class poker insight to a new school of aspiring poker players.
